Meet the Fee-Waived Fantastic Four

At Heartland Animal Shelter, every animal has a story — and this August, four of our most unforgettable ones are ready for their next chapter. As part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign, we’re proud to waive adoption fees all month long for four remarkable companions.

Meet Valencia, Flossie, Miss Charli, and Hamilton: our Fee-Waived Fantastic Four. Their personalities are distinct, their journeys inspiring — and they’re all just one forever home away from the happy ending they deserve.

Celebrate Compassion. Adopt or Give.

These four animals — and the countless others waiting in shelters across the country — are what Clear the Shelters is all about: real stories, real resilience, and real second chances.

Adopt. Donate. Share their stories. Help us clear the shelter and continue our mission.

Every dollar helps animals like Hamilton, Miss Charli, Valencia

, and Flossie find the futures they deserve.

Valentina: A Strong Will to Survive

From the moment Valentina arrived at Heartland, her future was uncertain. This outdoor stray—barely 8 pounds and not yet 2 years old—was fighting for her life. She needed emergenc

y hernia repair, and soon after, began an intensive course of treatment for Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a disease that was once considered untreatable. We prepared ourselves for the possibility that we might lose her. But Valentina had other plans. Thanks to the round-the-clock care of our medical team—and her own fierce will to live—she not only survived, she thrived. Today, she has blossomed into one of the most playful, joyful spirits in our shelter. Her energy is contagious, her personality magnetic.

A staff favorite, Valentina reigns supreme from the highest perch of our brand-new cat tree, a gift from our generous donors. She’s the only cat brave enough to scale it to the very top—a

nd once she’s there, she claims it like the queen she is. She’s enchanted by catnip, rolling in it with unrestrained delight, and will break into the cutest little hops when her zoomies take over. And then there’s her color—radiant orange, a shade almost always found on male cats. She’s a rare beauty in both appearance and spirit, one of those once-in-a-lifetime companions who will fill a home with laughter, warmth, and love. More information

Flossie: Resilient, Regal, and Ready

Flossie came from a horrific situation where about 20 cats were found in a squalid apartment after their human was removed following a drug overdose. Flossie, who is only 1 year old, is the last of this group to find a home. She was slow to warm up but has learned to trust and embrace the brighter side of life. She loves cozy blankets, gentle pets, and sunny spots where she can nap. More information

Hamilton: Our Loyal Longtimer

Hamilton is the kind of dog who doesn’t demand the spotlight — but he certainly deserves it. This 4-year-old pup is a quiet, loyal, and easygoing boy. Hamilton is our longest-resident pup. His small size and love of neighborhood walks make him the perfect companion for almost any living situation. Hamilton adores toys more than anything (especially the types that squeak) and proudly carries his stuffies on walks. He spends his days relaxing in the staff office, where he’s adored by all. Hamilton is sweet, chill, and absolutely ready to be someone’s whole world.. More information

Miss Charli: Looking for Love and Belly Rubs

Miss Charli comes to us from a shelter partner in Kentucky. She was surrendered by her family, who had had her since she was an 8-week-old puppy. We are so sad for this girl, who is now nearly 7 and surely heartbroken, but she is amazing us with her resilience, as dogs do! She is a smiley and affectionate girl who nudges you for pets with her muzzle, and promptly plops down and rolls over for belly rubs. Miss Charli loves people and gets along with dogs. She is a mature lady who is looking for a new home and the love and stability that we know she is craving. More information
