The Heartland Young Professionals Board (HYP) is a community of emerging leaders dedicated to making a meaningful impact for homeless cats and dogs.

This volunteer leadership group brings together people who care about animal welfare and want to use their skills, creativity, and connections to support Heartland Animal Shelter’s mission. HYP members raise awareness through engaging fundraising events and outreach that expands Heartland’s impact. Together, they help more animals find the loving homes they deserve while building leadership skills and community.

BOARD APPLICATION

Member Expectations

Attend at least 6 out of 12 meetings per year

Be an active member of at least one committee

Lead two fundraisers per year or donate $200 annually to HAS

Help at at least one signature event​

Voices of HYP

I have gotten to know you all and many others over the years while on HYP and the best part is, we are all there for the animals. Plus we know how to throw some good events. Something we should all be proud of is that our biggest event has grown so successful.

After fostering several amazing dogs, I knew I wanted to keep giving back on a different level once I couldn’t foster anymore. Joining HYP gave me the chance to jump in and help with the fun events I’d always enjoyed. I’ve since teamed up with a local business to raise funds for our animals while spotlighting our adoptable puppies and kittens. It’s been an exciting way to stay connected and make a real impact.

I rescued one of my dogs, Storm, from heartland in 2023 and I could tell how loved she was by the heartland staff and volunteers. She came from Kentucky at a year and a half old and we didn’t know much else about her other than she was a huge lover. I joined HYP because I wanted to give back to help the other dogs and cats who just wanted someone to love them, like my stormy girl.

I've had a positive experience with the other volunteers/staff members, and gotten the opportunity to learn about and help organize some of our awesome events. HYP has taught me a lot, helped me step out of my comfort zone, meet new people, and help animals along the way.
